Bill's Timeline

This is a brief narrative history of Bill's incredible life.
  • Beginnings
    Where: Philadelphia, PA

    Bill was born on July 7, 1925 in the City of Brotherly Love, Philadelphia, PA. (The city of Murals) to his parents William E and Mildred Callahan. 

    Bill was part of a family that included his 4 sisters, Marian Haines, HJanet Bowman, Margie Kloiber, and Eleanor Wolf.  During the great depression he and his siblings were separated and he was adopted by John and Ella Kay, who he considered his true parents. 

     

  • Bill Enlists in the United States Army Air Force
    Where: McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey
    At the age of 17, Bill told a little white lie in order to join the United States Army Air Force at McGuire Air Force Base in New Jersey.  During his military career, he was a bomber pilot and aircraft mechanic during WWII.  He received several medals and accommodations including his Wings and the Purple Heart, which were lost during his divorce to his first wife.
  • Bill's Military Career
    Where: Hiroshima

    On August 6, 1945, Bill was a bomber pilot in a decoy plane, one of many, that flew into Japan and dropped the first stomic bomb onto the city of Hiroshima.  All Bill said about this event was that he did not know what the bomb would do, and when it went off it was horific. 

    Not only did Bill love to fly planes, he also enjoyed working on them.  Every time a military plane would fly opver, he would look at them with amazement.  During his combat years in the military he was struck by shrapnel in his back bu never did state where or when it occurred.  During his career he also served in the Air Force during the Korean War.  He didn't talk much about his military career, but he did truly love serving his country. 

     

  • Bill Retirees from the Air Force
    Where: Eglin Air Force Base
    Bill retired from the United States Air Force on June 30, 1965 while stationed at Eglin Air Force Base due to the Vietnam War that was about to begin.  He retired as Chief Master Sergeant, Rank E-9, after 22 years, 8 months and 9 days of military service.  He reitred to Plant City, Florida where his adopted mother, Ella Kay, was residing.  While living there, he worked as a fisherman's guide in the Florida Gulf Coast with his wooden cabin cruiser.
